The Information Governance Initiative is offering a hands-on, practical information governance (IG) “boot camp” at the Information Governance Conference (InfoGovCon) on September 9th, 2014. During the IGI Boot Camp Sessions, practitioners will learn about setting the stage for IG at their organizations, getting started on their first IG project, forming an IG steering committee, and much more. The IGI Boot Camp Sessions are offered on the second day of the conference and are free with an InfoGovCon14 ticket.

10:15 AM to 10:45 AM: Setting the Stage for IG

During this panel discussion, workshop attendees will learn from our moderators the importance of developing an IG program and the various ways panelists have set the stage to integrate IG into their organizations.

10:45 AM to 11:45 AM: Getting Started: Quick and Dirty or Big Bang?

To get started with IG, should you pick small, quick projects with demonstrable ROI, or should you start with big, foundational elements like company-wide policies and new corporate governance structures? The right answer is complicated and situational. In this session, we will walk through examples of both and uncover a framework for getting started with IG.

11:45 AM to 1:15 PM: Lunch Break / Expo Hall Time

1:15 PM to 2:15 Understanding the Pillars of IG and Resolving their Siloed Approaches

Siloed approaches to resolving IG challenges have limited success because they are limited by the line of sight or perspective on what is most important to the stakeholder organization that is sponsoring the project. Attendees will work together to understand the different pillars and what is their line of sight. In addition, they will identify what is most important to each specific pillar.

2:15 PM to 2:30 PM: Networking Break

2:30 PM to 3:30 PM: How to Form an IG Steering Committee

Forming an effective steering committee is a common first step for getting started with IG.  This session will provide attendees with an understanding of the steps needed to form a committee, understanding which functions should be on it and what the mission or charter should be. Attendees will identify what approvals and authority are needed, how to find funding, and will walk away with a model IG steering committee charter document.

3:30 PM to 3:45 PM Workshop Wrap Up

The IGI will provide guests with key takeaways from the workshop and provide attendees with an overview of next steps they can take upon returning to the office to kick off their IG Programs.
